Advocating Literacy

My son won an "Emergent Reader" award from his school this week.  I am incredibly proud of his accomplishment.  I have read to my son since he was in the womb.  It is not proven that this may be a contributing factor in a child's reading development; however, there is no evidence that proves the contrary.

According to UNESCO there are 796 million illiterate adults in the world.  64% of them are women.

I believe it is imperative that we read to our children.  Those who do not have children can still play a big role in advocating literacy by donating, becoming educators (for children or adults) or supporting literacy initiatives in our community.
